El alumno deberá ser capaz de identificar y analizar los elementos estéticos que conforman el canon literario en lengua inglesa, formarse juicios críticos sobre el corpus literario inglés en relación con su contexto histórico y valorar su influencia en el contexto literario actual.
CE 14 – - (Module of Literature in English, Core Subject 9). [English Literature until 1800; English Literature from 1800 to 1900]. The student must be able to identify and analyze the aesthetic elements that make up the literary canon in English, form critical judgments about the English literary corpus in relation to its historical context, and assess its influence on the contemporary literary context.

 En consonancia con las competencias específicas del módulo correspondiente, la asignatura busca familiarizar al estudiante con el análisis de la literatura inglesa (poesía y novela) del siglo diecinueve, a través de cuatro fases específicas: la poesía romántica, la ficción anterior al período victoriano, la ficción victoriana y la poesía del período 1840-1900 (victoriana y premodernista). Se tratarán los aspectos estéticos, culturales e ideológicos más relevantes correspondientes a dichas fases con el fin de incentivar la capacidad de análisis de los estudiantes; y ayudarles a desarrollar juicios críticos personales. Tras cursar la materia, el estudiante deberá ser capaz de identificar y analizar los elementos estéticos que conforman el canon literario en lengua inglesa de los periodos estudiados; emitir juicios críticos razonados sobre el corpus literario inglés y la relación de éste con el contexto histórico que lo ha generado, y analizar las distintas líneas de influencia que han determinado el peso específico del canon literario en el contexto literario actual.
In line with the specific competences of the corresponding module, the aim is to familiarize students with the analysis of English literature (poetry and novel) of the nineteenth century, covering four specific phases: romantic poetry, fiction before the Victorian period, Victorian fiction and poetry of the period 1840- 1900 (Victorian and premodernist). The most relevant aesthetic, cultural and ideological aspects corresponding to these phases will be discussed in order to encourage students' analysis capacity; and help them develop personal critical judgments. After studying the subject, students must be able to identify and analyze the aesthetic elements that make up the literary canon in the English language of the periods studied; to issue reasoned critical judgments about the English literary corpus and its relation to the historical context that has generated it, and to analyze the different lines of influence that have determined the specific weight of the literary canon in the current literary context.

 La asignatura de literatura inglesa 1800-1900 ofrece una introducción a los géneros literarios, principales obras y autores y períodos cronológicos más importantes, considerando el contexto cultural en que se desenvuelven. Persigue los siguientes objetivos específicos: Proporcionar al estudiante 1. Conocimiento de los procesos generales de creación, recepción y difusión de la producción literaria 2. The subject of English Literature 1800-1900 offers an introduction to literary genres, major works and authors, as well as most important chronological periods, considering the cultural context in which they unfold. It pursues the following objectives: Offer students 1. Knowledge of the general processes of creation, reception and dissemination of literary production 2. Knowledge of the main genres and literary trends as well as works and most relevant authors. 3. basic cultural keys in the development of literary history 4. a methodology of analysis and interpretation applied to the history of literature in general and to the literary production of the particular period. 5. El curso ayuda a los estudiantes a: 1. Considerar la literatura como un reflejo de su entorno cultural; 2. Examinar las obras literarias desde varios puntos de vista; 3. Examinar y analizar los diversos elementos de una obra literaria; 4.Usar conceptos básicos y la terminología específica del análisis literario; 5. The course seeks to help students to: 1.Consider literary works as a reflection of their cultural milieu; 2. Examine literary works from various vantage points; 3. Examine and analyse the various elements of literary works; 4. Use basic concepts and specific terminology to literary analysis; 5. Recognise major themes in literary works, explore their implications, and identify their basic assumptions; 6. Analyse structure: understand how form contributes to meaning; 7. Recognise the need for literary evidence to support opinions and ideas regarding literary work; 8. Express opinions and responses to literature clearly and effectively both orally and in writing.
