SINOPSIS

Generales
CG2: Knowledge of research methodologies for English linguistics (Conocer las metodologías para la investigación lingüística en lengua inglesa).
CG5: Comprehension and integration of massive and complex information obtained from different sources (articles, the internet, specialised journals, etc.), within different theoretical perspectives of English linguistics (Comprender e integrar información masiva y compleja procedente de diversas fuentes (artículos, Internet, revistas especializadas, etc.) dentro de distintas perspectivas teóricas de la lingüística inglesa).
CB6: Acquisition of knowledge that provides a solid background and opportunities to be original in the development and/or application of ideas, often in a research context (Poseer y comprender conocimientos que aporten una base u oportunidad de ser originales en el desarrollo y/o aplicación de ideas, a menudo en un contexto de investigación).
CB7: Students¿ capacity to apply the knowledge acquired and their ability to solve problems in new or little-known environments within broader (or multidisciplinary) contexts related to their field of study (Que los estudiantes sepan aplicar los conocimientos adquiridos y su capacidad de resolución de problemas en entornos nuevos o poco conocidos dentro de contextos más amplios (o multidisciplinares) relacionados con su área de estudio).
CB8 - Students should be able to integrate knowledge and tackle the complexity of forming judgements based on information which, whilst incomplete or limited, includes reflections on the social and ethical responsibilities associated with the application of their knowledge and judgements (Que los estudiantes sean capaces de integrar conocimientos y enfrentarse a la complejidad de formular juicios a partir de una información que, siendo incompleta o limitada, incluya reflexiones sobre las responsabilidades sociales y éticas vinculadas a la aplicación de sus conocimientos y juicios).

Presentation of contents related to new terms, concepts and other materials. Discussion.

Analysis of a series of samples of language related to the theoretical contents. Theory and practice will not necessarily be divided into separate sections.

Esta asignatura tiene como objetivo la adquisición de una perspectiva general de los conceptos fundamentales de la Lingüística Sistémica Funcional, por lo que respecta tanto a la teoría como a sus diversas aplicaciones.

The aim of this course is to provide students with a general overview of the fundamental concepts of Systemic Functional Linguistics, covering both the theory and its various applications.

Objetivos

By the end of the course, students should have: 1. Acquired a general knowledge of Systemic Functional Linguistics. 2. Acquired a general understanding of the basic concepts and main issues involved in the analysis of discourse from a systemic functional perspective. 3. Developed the ability to carry out analyses of the English clause from a Systemic Functional perspective. 4. Become more effective in reading as well as developing critical and analytic skills from a functional perspective.

Al final del curso, los estudiantes deberán haber: 1. Adquirido conocimientos generales sobre la Lingüística Sistémica Funcional. 2. Adquirido una comprensión general de los conceptos básicos y las cuestiones principales que intervienen en el análisis del discurso desde una perspectiva sistémica funcional. 3. Desarrollado la capacidad de realizar análisis de la cláusula inglesa desde una perspectiva sistémica funcional. 4. Mejorado su eficacia en la lectura, así como desarrollado habilidades críticas y analíticas desde una perspectiva funcional.

1. Introduction: 1.1. Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) in the Linguistics landscape 1.2. SFL: Basic concepts. 2. SFL as descriptive tool 2.1. Experiential description. 2.2. Logical description 2.3. Interpersonal description. 2.4. Textual description 2.5. Affordances of metafunctional description 3. Cohesion and texture 4. Genre and register 5. SFL as a theoretical framework for Critical Discourse Analysis and Multimodal Analysis 6. SFL and Appraisal 7. Application of SFL to professional contexts 8. SFL and Educational Linguistics 9. System networks in Educational Linguistics 10. Use of Corpus Tool for textual analysis.

Evaluación

Active participation in the teaching-learning process / Participación activa en el proceso de enseñanza-aprendizaje (i.e. Reading-based assignments and class participation): 40%

Research proposal (2,000 words) / propuesta de investigación (2.000 palabras): 20%

Lightning presentation of research proposal (10-15 minutes) / Presentación relámpago de la propuesta de investigación (10-15 minutos): 40%
